I Finally Got a Cabinet

Posted in About Matskat, Game News, Random Shit with tags , , , , , , , , , , on August 16, 2010 by Mat$kat

It’s the top brick in the pyramid of gaming addiction.

It’s the height of geekness.

Today I got a SEGA  Aero City candy cabinet. Candy cabinets are sit-down Japanese style machines – usually found in rows inside a Japanese game center.

Crazy story, I posted a “want to buy” on Craigslist – 30 seconds later I get a tip from a random dude to check out the forums over at Aracde Museum. 24 hours later I have the object of my desire.

It has the original Capcom Street Fighter II board in it currently, but after I clean it up and do a little restoration, it’s gonna be a dedicated shooter cabinet. The monitor looks FANTASTIC! I cannot believe that this thing is in as good of shape as it is. Everything works 100%. Buttons and sticks are a little grimy, and will soon be replaced, and the vinyl overlay on the control panel is old and cracked – another easy fix.

My wife is gonna move in with the bleach soon 🙂 That should take care of the 25 years of cigarette smoke that gives it a slight beige hue.

Now with the Pictures…

Three Indie Games to Watch For….

Posted in Game News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on May 18, 2010 by Mat$kat

I love indie games…

Not ALL of them, heavens no…there’s a lot of crap out there – but while shoveling through the shit over the past few months, I have discovered several great looking indie titles.

There are three in particular that are worth notice, take a look:

Klei Entertainment

Shank is a beautiful 2-D brawler in the vein of Metal Slug. The animation looks great, very cartoony (and if I didn’t know better, I’d think it was somehow related to Penny Arcade, as the visual style is very similar). Klei Entertainment has a big hit on their hands with this game. The main character, a bad-ass looking dude with a knife, has several fluid moves: a flying stab, brutal punches and kicks, the ability to fire weapons, and awesome platforming abilities – all of which appear expertly animated. The attention to detail in this game is awesome. Although there is no demo available yet, it appears that although the game has simple controls. the complexity is in a contextual combo system, evident in the video clip below:

Shank’s spaghetti western setting, and excessively exaggerated violence combined with a pleasing color palette and 70’s exploitation-flick soundtrack are certainly making the wait for this game even more difficult. Considering there is no specific ETA, gamers everywhere may have a while to go before we ourselves can “Shank” some bad-guys. Keep your eyes open for this one.

PlayDead Studios

Xbox Live Arcade

Limbo looks very promising. The info we have on this game is sparse, but from what I gather the player takes control of a young boy who, in searching for his missing sister, finds himself lost in a dream-like world called….yep, “Limbo”. The game’s style itself is very surreal, the game is 100% black and white, with simply GORGEOUS lighting and animation. The style is like  shadows projected on your screen – the foreground details are solid black, and depth is achieved using parallax scrolling and several shadowing, shading, and blur effects. This game, though it stars a young boy is NOT for kids. The ways your character can die in this puzzling game are quite brutal and explicit. In one clip, I saw the boy decapitated – his severed head gently rolling down a hill before the game prompts to try again. Another scene has the player dragging the obviously dead bodies of children out of a swamp. Despite the violence, this game is beautiful. A puzzle game at heart similar to last year’s “Braid“, Limbo has firmly planted itself on my radar. Check out some gameplay :

Eerie huh? I personally can’t wait. Danish developer PlayDead Studios very well may have a strong competitor here with their surreal nightmare…Limbo.

Xbox Live Arcade

Fez is a forthcoming platforming game developed by independent software developers Polytron. Personally, the art style looks similar to Cave Story- a decidedly 8-bit pixel-art presentation. In fact, Fez won the “Excellence in Visual Art” award at the Independent Games Festival in 2008. The feature of Fez that is most notable is a gameplay mechanic where the 2D perspective shifts to 3D in a manner similar to Nintendo’s Super Paper Mario and the use of M.C. Escher-like illusions similar to the PSP title Echochrome – bringing unseen angles and solutions into view momentarily. I cannot say enough about how exxcited I am for this game. It has been in production for some time, and considering it won an award in 2008 and there is STILL no solid release date , makes the wait even more painful.Just take a look at the clip below and tell me you aren’t interested:

It has been announced that the Fez will come to Xbox Live Arcade in early 2010. Keep your eyes open.

So, there they are. Whaddya think?

I’m gonna try to feature more upcoming, niche games here – as they are my favorite type…

Until next time.

Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Announced @ Capcom’s Captivate 2010

Posted in Game News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on April 20, 2010 by Mat$kat

This is it folks, after a decade of demand Capcom has finally given in…

Here’s the reveal teaser, via YouTube.

From the looks of things, it appears that the 2.5D  SFIV engine will NOT  be used, dashing our hopes of maybe getting high-res 2D sprites a la BlazBlue Capcom is stating that the game will be played with 3D characters on a 2D plane, but that an advanced version of the MT framework (used in games such as Lost Planet 2 and Resident Evil 5) will be utilized.

Described in the press kit as a “living comic…with a deep story”, MvC3’s announcement today is a big deal and it’s mainstream success might open the door for more games in the VS. series or hopefully a completely original fighter.

Capcom’s Seth Killian had this to say “It’s important that game’s have strong stories for Marvel, with fighting games it’s not as essential as an action game or role playing game but we are very much insisting there be some cohesive kind of story for this game. We actually have a subtitle for the game that means something this time. In the coming months we will be giving you more information about.”

As far as characters go, it appears that the following are confirmed to be in the game:

Wolverine, the Hulk, Iron Man, Street Fighter’s Ryu, Darkstalker’s Morrigan, Resident Evil’s Chris Redfield, Captain America, Super Skrull, Chun-Li, Deadpool, Felicia, Dante, Frank West, Mephisto, Black Widow and Doctor Doom.

Now if only Capcom would give us another Darkstalkers! Hey, I can HOPE….

Check back here for more news from Captivate 2010 … I’m sure Capcom has more surprises for us.

Arcade Culture – Hitting the Nail on the Head

Posted in Random Shit with tags , , , , , , , , on March 28, 2010 by Mat$kat

Today I read the best piece of writing, from a gamer’s perspective, that I have ever encountered.

The demise of American arcades pains me, along with the idea that my daughter will never experience the wondrous and challenging world of arcades, as I had the privelege of experiencing – THIS is why I’m so passionate about building and sharing my custom joysticks with anyone and everyone who bothers to read this page. To keep the culture alive in America.

In this essay, Alex Kierkegaard wraps up, and ties with a bow, the essence of arcade culture.  More importantly, it explains, for those who just don’t get it (not YOU, beloved reader! You are distinguished, elegant, and have impeccable taste in blogs) the concept of playing a SINGLE CREDIT.

I’m not just preaching to the choir here, this is a great read, even for arcade vets.

So read it, then make a friend read it, then get together with that friend and…

Espgaluda II Black Label Region Free (X360) Finally Arrives!

Posted in About Matskat, Game News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on March 17, 2010 by Mat$kat

I have been waiting since Feb. 25th for Cave’s newest and last region free shooting game, Espgaluda II. Finally today it arrived. I was beginning to get nervous. I ordered it from Play-Asia, and past experiences have been positive. Last order tool 10 days from Hong Kong to Saint Louis, Missouri.

Suffice it to say, I’m super excited to play, I’m gonna be up all damn night.

I’ll post a review as soon as I get through a few of the modes.

God of War III Midnight Launch

Posted in About Matskat, Game News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on March 17, 2010 by Mat$kat

I attended my local Gamestop’s midnight launch for God of War III.

Expecting more of a turnout, I brought along a couple of my custom joysticks – planning to do a bit of old-fashioned networking.

The turnout was indeed small, but I managed to  gladhand some local gamers and hand out a few ghetto business cards – the main goal though, was picking up God Of War III. Ignoring my better judgement, I also picked up the newly released Metro 2033,  which so far is a pleasant surprise.

All in all, it was cool and now some local dudes know about my joysticks….now to bust some heads…

“I shall have my revenge!”
