Arcade Culture – Hitting the Nail on the Head

Posted in Random Shit with tags , , , , , , , , on March 28, 2010 by Mat$kat

Today I read the best piece of writing, from a gamer’s perspective, that I have ever encountered.

The demise of American arcades pains me, along with the idea that my daughter will never experience the wondrous and challenging world of arcades, as I had the privelege of experiencing – THIS is why I’m so passionate about building and sharing my custom joysticks with anyone and everyone who bothers to read this page. To keep the culture alive in America.

In this essay, Alex Kierkegaard wraps up, and ties with a bow, the essence of arcade culture.  More importantly, it explains, for those who just don’t get it (not YOU, beloved reader! You are distinguished, elegant, and have impeccable taste in blogs) the concept of playing a SINGLE CREDIT.

I’m not just preaching to the choir here, this is a great read, even for arcade vets.

So read it, then make a friend read it, then get together with that friend and…

Yo Gabba Gabba!

Posted in About Matskat, Random Shit with tags , , , , on March 21, 2010 by Mat$kat

Just got back from taking my daughter to see “Yo Gabba Gabba LIVE” at the Fox Theatre, here in Saint Louis. For the uninitiated, Yo Gabba Gabba is a super-hip children’s show that airs on Nickelodeon. The creator of the show, and main character, “DJ Lance Rock” is a Saint Louis native and the show is a huge hit. It’s so damn hip! The coolest moment of the show, and a perfect example of the level of cool involved here, was when Biz Markie (the oldskool rapper…remember “Oh baby you, got what I NEEEEEED”) came out on stage and gave a beat-box tutorial to all the children. It was pretty boss.

Now I know this has NOTHING to do with videogames or joysticks, BUT I just gotta tell ya..this show was DOPE! If any of you have kids, and have managed to live under rocks and have avoided ever hearing about Yo Gabba Gabba, then do yourself and your kids a favor and check it out!

And I’m OUT!

I have been waiting since Feb. 25th for Cave’s newest and last region free shooting game, Espgaluda II. Finally today it arrived. I was beginning to get nervous. I ordered it from Play-Asia, and past experiences have been positive. Last order tool 10 days from Hong Kong to Saint Louis, Missouri.

Suffice it to say, I’m super excited to play, I’m gonna be up all damn night.

I’ll post a review as soon as I get through a few of the modes.

No Snakes in Ireland – St. Patrick’s Day

Posted in About Matskat with tags , , , , , , , on March 17, 2010 by Mat$kat

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day!

You might surmise, by my logo that I am an Irish-American, and DAMN proud of it.

Today is the first St. Paddy’s that I have had to work, usually for the past SEVERAL years I have the day off.

Usually my wife and I spend the day at the “real” parade in old Dogtown (Dogtown is St.Louis’ oldest Irish ghetto,  getting it’s name from the dogs that would chase horses and carriages down the street in the old days). Spending the day stuck in my office, was quite the downer..BUT lemons = lemonade! I spent the morning blasting bagpipes and the Dropkick Murphys – annoying the shit out of my co-workers.

There’s always next year – so have a pint of beer and a glass of whiskey for me!

God of War III Midnight Launch

Posted in About Matskat, Game News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on March 17, 2010 by Mat$kat

I attended my local Gamestop’s midnight launch for God of War III.

Expecting more of a turnout, I brought along a couple of my custom joysticks – planning to do a bit of old-fashioned networking.

The turnout was indeed small, but I managed to  gladhand some local gamers and hand out a few ghetto business cards – the main goal though, was picking up God Of War III. Ignoring my better judgement, I also picked up the newly released Metro 2033,  which so far is a pleasant surprise.

All in all, it was cool and now some local dudes know about my joysticks….now to bust some heads…

“I shall have my revenge!”
